Blaeu Atlas of Scotland, 1654
Place-names index
This index is designed, first to provide access to the texts by way of the places named in them, and second to give place-name scholars the actual forms (vernacular and Latin) used in these 16th- to 17th-century texts. It includes almost all place names in them, both Scottish and non-Scottish (the only exceptions are some from the poems). The headings are the modern forms, except where the place has not yet been identified. The second column gives the forms used, first vernacular (mostly Scots, occasionally Gaelic, English, Dutch, etc.), then Latin (in the nominative case, whatever is in the text, and including adjectival derivatives). Where a reference occurs alone, the form used is identical to the heading. Other forms are arranged alphabetically within the two groups. The references are to the page numbers of the openings of the Latin text on this website. When the same form occurs two or more times within the same opening, this is not noted.
Within each page, the place name usually appears in its modern form, apart from where translations of variant original vernacular/Latin forms have been used to preserve meaning (eg. North Sea also appears as Deucaledonian Sea, German Sea, Scottish Sea, etc.)
