Notes: The front of the manuscript known as Pont 23 contains two maps, usually referred to as Pont 23(1) and Pont 23(2). The larger map, Pont 23(1) covers an area of Perthshire from Balloch Castle (just east of Kenmore) and Loch Rannoch in the west, to Dunkeld in the east. Much of the drainage of the rivers Garry, Tummel, and Tay is shown. Pont 23(2) shows an area to the east of Pont 23(1). A narrow strip of country is depicted from the confluence of the Lunan Burn with the River Isla, about 3km west of Couper Angus, in the east, to the Loch of Lowes and the town of Dunkeld in the west.
  • Other than the watercourses, only a small area of Strath Tay contains any detail, with several settlements located by a range of symbols. This map probably represents work in progress.
  • Note the prominent depiction of Kraich (Schiehallion) a distinctive 3554ft high mountain. Unusually, this is the sole mountain drawn on the map.
  • The drawing of Blair Castle may be compared with that on Pont 19. The two are very different, and this may indicate that not all of Pont's detailed drawings of buildings can be taken as true representations. The drawing of a castle at Weemh (Castle Menzies), however, probably is an accurate depiction of the building and its surrounding gardens at the time of Pont's visit.
  • Some of the names on this map were added later by Robert Gordon; for example: Blair Castel, Garry fl., Timmel fl., and Dunkelde are all in his handwriting.
  • There are several descriptive notes on this map. One reads:
  • At abrefalduy [Aberfeldy] hath bene a ancie[n]t
    traces of a

  • In one corner there is a faint drawing of a coat of arms belonging to the family of Maxton of Cultoquhey, an estate some 4km northeast of Crieff which Pont shows on sheet Pont 21.

  • Four other maps by Pont overlap Pont 23(1): Pont 18(1), Pont 19, Pont 20, and Pont 25 (back).
  • Several of Robert Gordon's manuscript maps include at least part of this area. They are sheets: 2, 4, 6, 38, 40, and 41.
  • This area is included on Joan Blaeu's printed map Braid-Allaban (1654).

  • Pont 23(2) Dunkeld to Blairgowrie: the Lunan Burn
  • There are several short notes on this map. At Fingast Loch, one relates to the variation in the rate of flow of the Lunan Burn. It reads:
  • falling wher others
    waters ar
    a speat
    whe[n] other [i]s decres[ing]

  • Pont 25 (front), Pont 26, and Pont 27 also include part of this area.
  • The following of Robert Gordon's manuscript maps are relevant to at least part of map (2): 2, 4, 6, 41, and 43.
  • This area falls within Joan Blaeu's map of Braid-Allaban (1654).
