War Office, Great Britain 1:20,000, GSGS 2748

The origins of this military series were on the Western Front (see our First World War trench maps), but the series also continued after 1918, covering very selective parts of England, Scotland, and Wales, primarily for artillery training purposes. Standard sheet coverage was 15 by 10 kilometres; most maps were printed in black, with water in blue, contours at 5 metre intervals in brown, and a 1 km grid overlay and figures in red. Topographic detail was selectively redrawn from the Ordnance Survey six-inch to the mile maps of the 1920s. The sheets were laid out on the metric British System grid, with a Cassini projection and the meridian of Dunnose. The sheets were numbered into 25 divisions (as letters of the alphabet) of a notional parent sheet covering 75 x 50 km (Roman numerals), ordered from the south of Great Britain running north (eg. VII.H, XII.S, etc.). The series was partly superseded by the work of GSGS 3906 at 1:25,000 scale in the 1930s.

Although only around 118 GSGS 2748 sheets were published, our holdings are also incomplete, with 21 sheets covering scattered locations, primarily in Scotland.
