Notes: | The manuscript known as Pont 22 bears three maps. Two, Pont 22(1) and Pont 22(2) are on the front of the sheet, shown here. The other map, Pont 22(3), is on the back of the sheet. It covers an area between the Water of May in the east and Drummond Castle, about 5km south west of Crieff in the west. t shows Glen Almont (Glen Almond) from the point where the River Almond flows into the River Tay in the east to the headwaters of the River Almond, south east of Loch Pont 22(1) Part of Strathearn, Perthshire, south of the River Earn
- The carefully depicted range of hills to the south are the Ochil Hills.
- Note the neat drawing of Kincardine Castle and its surrounding parkland at Kinkarn.
- Pont's careful depictions of some of the settlements on this map were probably meant as accurate likenesses. In other words, Pont was drawing the buildings exactly as he saw them from his viewpoint.
- Some of the place-names have been re-written in darker ink by Robert Gordon. Thus, for example, Pont's faint Mukkarsy becomes Muccarsy, and is inverted, in the hand of Gordon.
- Much of this area is also included on Pont 21.
- The following manuscript maps by Robert Gordon include parts of this area but contain little additional information: 2, 6, 48, and 53.
- No maps by Blaeu are relevant to this Pont map.
Pont 22(2) Glen Almond
- There are several notes, neatly written. For example, Glen-shy (Glenshee) is described as at:
- the
head of the wat[er] of Shyachy [Shockie] And the head of Glen Almond is said to be: a strait hew[n] glen & narrow This map is comparable with Pont 21(1) for the part of Glen Almond east of the Sma' Glen. A small part of Pont 24 overlaps with this map in the far east. Of the Gordon manuscript maps only sheet 6 is really comparable in its coverage. The printed map of Braid-Allaban by Blaeu includes a small part of Glen Almond in its south-east corner. View the Pont Maps website. View maps by Blaeu and Robert and James Gordon. |
