Notes: | This attractive pictorial map depicting Scotland at play was published by an oil company to promote their fuel. Charles Pratt and Company was an oil company formed in 1860s in Brooklyn, New York, becoming part of John Rockefeller's Standard Oil organization in 1874. One of their first foreign affiliates was the Anglo-American Oil Company, formed in the United Kingdom from 1888. As Anglo-American steadily grew during the 20th century, they used the Pratt's brand name for various petroleum and lubricant products, including their 'High Test' motor fuel, promoted on a range of merchandise, including maps. Pratt's 'High Test' Plan of Scotland is an excellent example of the pictorial map tradition, one which rapidly increased in popularity in the mid-20th century. |
