Plans and profiles of bridges, 18th-20th centuries

decorative graphic illustrating this particular set of maps

A selection of maps and plans relating to plans and profiles of bridges in Scotland. Most of these relate to bridge projects undertaken by the Stevenson civil engineers in the 19th century. These plans are generally very detailed, large scale representations of the bridge, including some proposals that were never implemented, and are useful in showing bridge engineering and design. For some early plans of bridges, see also estate maps for bridges in rural areas, town plans for bridges in urban areas, as well as railway plans. At less detailed scales, county maps and maps of Scotland may also include details of bridges. Ordnance Survey maps are excellent for bridges from the 1840s onwards.
