Map Detail
Name: Pont, Timothy, 1560?-1614?
Title: [Strath Spey] - Pont 6 (front)
Imprint: [ca. 1583-96]
Pagination: 1 manuscript map ; 41 x 28 cm.
Shelfmark: Adv.MS.70.2.9 (Pont 6)
Notes: This is the front of the manuscript known as Pont 6. It contains 1 map, Pont 6(1). The back of the manuscript contains two other maps, Pont 6(2) and Pont 6(3). The map shown here covers an area of Strath Spey from Fochabers at the bottom to Aviemore at the top.
  • Much of this map has been overdrawn in darker ink, possibly by Robert Gordon. Sometimes this results in alterations to Pont's original map.
  • Ben Rines (Ben Rinnes), a 2,759ft hill south-west of Dufftown, is neatly drawn in profile, as is Kroimdail hill (the Hills of Cromdale) (bottom centre).
  • The parallel horizontal lines drawn over this sheet were probably an aid to copying.
  • A number of notes are written across this map in Pont's handwriting, but because the ink has faded some can be difficult to read. At Keuche[n] Lochen (top centre) a clear, over-written note reads:
    • at Badinluike[n]
      a skirmish
      by the grants aga[in]st
      the clanchatta[n]

Some of the other notes are partly transcribed by Stone (1989).

  • Pont 6 (back), 7, 9, and [Gordon] 23 partly overlap this map.
  • Relevant manuscript maps by Gordon are mainly: 3, 5, 24, 25, and 26.
  • Blaeu's printed maps of Extima Scotiae, Aberdonia & Banfia, and Braid-Allaban include small areas of Pont 6 (front).
