This finely engraved map depicts Hong Kong just after the time that it was formally ceded to Great Britain under the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. In 1841, Commander Edward Belcher of the Royal Navy had surveyed Hong Kong Harbour, and his Admiralty charts formed an important base for this map with its soundings and limited landward information. The map was surveyed by Lieutenant Collinson of the Royal Engineers in 1845, and all of his place names were checked by the then Governor of Hong-Kong, Sir John Francis Davis.
