[Gordon] 54 : Pont's map of north west Fife
- Although this map is pasted on to the bottom left hand corner of Robert Gordon's
manuscript map 54, it has been identified as the work of Timothy Pont
by Dr Jeffrey Stone (1974).
- Two notes are to be seen. One, on the western margin reads:
-
Pt [part] of the Par:[ish]
of Abyrnathy [Abernethy]
The other, to the south of the map says:
-
m[ar]ching [wi]th the paresh
of Coulesly [Collessie]
- The place names on this map have been analysed in detail by Taylor
(2001)
- This map is overlapped in the north by Pont 26. It is overlapped
in the north east by a maritime chart once known as Pont 31 but now believed
to be the work of James Mar 'an Injenious Marriner of Dundee' (c.1680).
- The following manuscript maps by Robert Gordon include at least
part of this area: 4, 6, 41, 43, 46, 47, 48, 53, and 54A.
- The information on this map was used by Joan Blaeu in constructing his map of Fifae Pars Orientalis, and the area is also included in his Fifae Vicecomitatus.
Maps by Blaeu
and Gordon
can be accessed via
the National Library of Scotland's Digital Library.
