Pont 35 : Nithsdale; part of Teviotdale
Pont 35(1) Nithsdale, including DRVMFREES (Dumfries)
- This map has been subjected to a detailed evaluation by Stone (1968 and 1973).
- Two paper patches containing revised mapping for the areas covered
have been pasted on to this sheet. Stone (1989) has discussed these
in detail, and has conjectured that at least one of them (the upper)
may have been attached by Joan Blaeu.
- The copy of this map made by Robert Gordon in 1644 ([Gordon] 62) exists
today in the Map Library of the National Library of Scotland.
- According to Stone (1989): 'There is more evidence for the direct
use of Pont's Nithsdale by Blaeu than any other extant Pont manuscript'.
- Note the presence of a lead mine in the hills east of Thornhill (centre
left).
- There is a very marginal overlap in the north east of the area
between this map and Pont 34.
- The following manuscript maps by Robert Gordon include at least
part of this area: 60, 61, 62, and 63.
- Blaeu's printed map of Nithia (1654) is particularly relevant although it contains somewhat fewer place names than the Pont 35. Blaeu's Annandiae, Gallovidia, and Coila also include part of this area.
Pont 35(2) part of Teviotdale
- An attempt has been made to separate this map from the larger map with an
ink line. In fact, some names relating to the map occur on the Nithsdale
side of the line, in Pont 35(1). However, they can be distinguished
from that map by the fact that they are inverted. The map has also been
crossed out at some time, perhaps indicating that it had been superseded
in some way.
- This is the only surviving Pont map for south east Scotland.
- No other Pont map covers this area.
- Three manuscript maps by Robert Gordon include a part of this
area: [Gordon] 6, 56, and 57.
- Two printed maps by Joan Blaeu are relevant to this area: Teviotia and Lauderdalia.
