Kilchurn Castle
Built in the mid-15th century by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy,
Kilchurn Castle (Castel cheulchurn) is situated at the northern
end of Loch Awe, two miles west of Dalmally. This five-storey tower
house was damaged in attacks by the MacGregors until their subjugation
by the Campbells, and it was not eventually abandoned until the later
18th century. A picturesque and romantic ruin, it now lies on a peninsula
(rather than the island as shown by Pont) due to the lowering of the
Loch Awe water level in 1817.
