Inverness
The 'capital of the Highlands', the royal burgh of Inverness (INNER
NES) is shown on this Pont map orientated with south-west at the
top. The River Ness, straddled by two bridges, flows on the right-hand
side from top to bottom down to the Beauly Firth. For some reason
the town has been crossed out by Pont, and buildings are not easy
to identify, but the castle (the 15th century stone-built fortress
on castle hill, now serving as a court house) can be seen at the top.
Another smaller sketch of Inverness appears on Pont
5.
