Dumbarton
In this extract both the town (Toune of Dumbartan) and the
castle (CASTEL OF DUMBRITTON) are clearly shown by the banks
of the River Leven. Fortified from at least the 5th century AD, the
basalt rock upon which the castle stands was known as the Dun Breatann,
the capital of the old Kingdom of Strathclyde.
