Charles W. J. Withers is Professor of Historical Geography at the University of Edinburgh. He has research interests in the cultural and historical geography of Gaelic Scotland, and in the history of geographical thought. He has published extensively in both areas, his most recent book being Geography, Science and National Identity: Scotland since 1520, published in 2001 by Cambridge University Press.
